Man Utd have controversial Raheem Sterling transfer plan if Man City star becomes available

Manchester United will make a shock move for Raheem Sterling if Manchester City's Champions League ban is upheld by UEFA, after the winger was recommended by the club's analytics department

Manchester United will make a brazen attempt to sign Raheem Sterling from bitter rivals Manchester City in the event that Pep Guardiola's side's ban from European football is upheld.

United chiefs are well aware that Sterling is currently happy at City and a move to United seems far fetched but with no Champions League football he would certainly consider his options.

Sterling's representatives are unaware of any interest from United.

Earlier on Monday, the Red Devils announced they were extending to loan deal of Odion Ighalo until January 2021.

But boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still in the market for more goalscoring power and Sterling, who is closing in on a century of goals for City, would provide exactly that.

The Independent say that Sterling is a name the club’s analytics department ‘have been working on’ as they settle on their summer targets.

Jadon Sancho is currently the priority, while Kai Havertz is being lined up as another potential arrival from the Bundesliga.

But signing former Liverpool star Sterling would be an enormous coup for Manchester United, should the opportunity present itself.

Players rarely move between City and United, though Carlos Tevez is a recent example of one who crossed the divide, albeit in the other direction.

City will be desperate to keep hold of their England international, who is contracted to the club until 2023 on a weekly wage of around £300,000-per-week.

The club's appeal will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on June 8-10 and the decision may have a big impact on the future of Sterling.

The QPR academy graduate has also been linked with a move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants still searching for lethal goal-scorer from out wide as a long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Whatever the future holds for Sterling, United boss Solskjaer has claimed Man Utd would look to exploit the transfer market this summer.

And he also expressed a belief that the market would be ‘completely different’ to how it was before.

"We're always looking to improve the squad,” said the Norwegian.

For now United’s priority remains Sancho, with the winger impressing once again by scoring the first hat-trick of his career at the weekend.

United are ready to hand him the No 7 shirt made famous by the likes of George Best, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Ronaldo at Old Trafford.
