Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher has had his say on the potential of former team-mate Steven Gerrard getting the Reds job one day.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard should only become Reds manager if the timing is right, claims his former team-mate Jamie Carragher. Gerrard has been widely touted as a Liverpool boss of the future after Jurgen Klopp leaves Anfield. The former captain is in his second season of first-team management where he is attempting to restore the balance at the top of Scottish football with Rangers.

Carragher says Liverpool appointing Gerrard is different to Frank Lampard becoming Chelsea head coach last summer.

The Sky Sports pundit says the Liverpool job comes up far less frequently than Chelsea's because managers are generally given more time at Anfield.

"The timing has to be right," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"I think it's slightly different to Frank at Chelsea in that the Chelsea job seems to come up every two or three years.

"It's almost like everyone has a go at the Chelsea job at some stage and I always felt Frank would get that [job] and I'm sure John Terry will in the future.

"I think Liverpool's slightly different in that if the manager's doing well and the supporters are quite pleased, the manager will be in the job for five or six years and I'm sure it will be longer now with Jurgen.

"It was the same with Rafa [Benitez] and [Gerard] Houllier, go back to Roy Evans.

"So Liverpool managers always get a fair crack of the whip more often than not."

Carragher says Gerrard will constantly be linked with the Liverpool job whenever it comes available.

However, he says the timing must be right not only for the club but also for Gerrard.

Carragher added: "It's just whether Stevie's in the right position when that job comes up, whether he's been successful at that time in the job that he's in or whether he's actually available himself and the job's available.

"So I think in a perfect world yes [Gerrard will become Liverpool manager] but the timing has to be right I think for all parties.

"There's no doubt every time the Liverpool job becomes available now in the next 10 or 15 years, Steven Gerrard's name will be there or thereabouts because of his history of the club and how good a player he was.

"What that does is it gives him respect the first day he walks into the dressing room because of the player he's been.

"It doesn't guarantee he will be a great manager for the club and doesn't guarantee that he should get the job but what it does mean is he has got a bit of a headstart on other candidates at different times as I said in the next decade or so.

"But maybe he may need to come down to the Premier League when the Rangers job finishes at some stage and show what he can do in the Premier League.

"Liverpool Football Club, as Stevie does know, should always be about trying to get the best you can possibly get. If that's Steven Gerrard, happy days for everyone."
