Tottenham join Philippe Coutinho transfer chase with loan deal being considered

Jose Mourinho could try and rejuvenate Tottenham before his first full season in charge by agreeing a deal to bring in Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona

Philippe Coutinho could join Tottenham from Barcelona when the transfer window eventually reopens.

The Brazil international struggled to find his feet after leaving Liverpool for Barca in January of 2018 but has shown glimpses of his talent while on loan in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

The 27-year-old was strongly advised to reject a move to Spain by Jurgen Klopp in comments that now look justified, with Coutinho missing out on the Reds’ two impressive Champions League campaigns.

It might now be Jose Mourinho to give the playmaker a chance to redeem himself, with several Premier League clubs set to be offered his services.

The Mirror have reported that although Chelsea have already expressed an interest in Coutinho, Spurs are contemplating making an offer with Bayern unlikely to make his temporary deal permanent.

The report adds that Liverpool have rejected the chance to bring him back to Anfield thanks to their impressive season under Klopp, who has led his team to the brink of the title.

The former Inter Milan midfielder told Sports Illustrated of his former club back in February: "Liverpool is flying, and it doesn't surprise me.

"We've seen it already last year when they won the Champions League, but I'm also not surprised because of their fantastic squad and manager.

"I am so happy for them, because I have so many friends there, former team-mates, so I'm just so happy for them, but that's all.

"I don't look back. I took another path, and now I am on another journey, much like everyone else.

"I'm focused entirely – just like them – on reaching my dreams. I'm happy with what I did in the past, and now I can only look forward."

Tottenham sit eighth in the Premier League table having won only 11 of their previous 29 fixtures in the competition, leaving them at risk of missing out on Champions League qualification.

The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss said last month: "I know that automatically our team will improve next season, but we also know that we have to improve in other areas.

"I am not going to tell you in which way exactly I am going to analyse it.

Before adding: "With the squad we've got at the moment, it is going to be very difficult.

"But we have matches to play, matches to fight. We have to be strong to cope with the limitations we have.”
