Rangers boss Steven Gerrard could raid Liverpool for Alfredo Morelos 'transfer replacement'

Rangers are searching for a potential replacement for star striker Alfredo Morelos, with the Colombian forward heavily linked with a transfer switch at the end of the season.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly readying a bid for Morelos and Rangers are reportedly resigned to losing their top scorer whenever the transfer window opens.

Manager Steven Gerrard claimed last November that they would not even entertain a bid of £50m for Morelos but, according to a new report from Goal, that stance has changed.

Now, they are actively searching for the forward's replacement and have drawn up a lift of five potential targets, including a player from Gerrard's former club Liverpool.

Alfredo Morelos may depart Rangers in the summer

20-year-old prospect Rhian Brewster, who is currently on loan at Championship outfit Swansea, is on the list but he is highly-rated by current Reds boss Jurgen Klopp so a switch to Rangers is only likely to happen on loan.

Ex-Sunderland forward Josh Maja is also said to be on the list, with the Frenchman currently plying his trade in Ligue 1 with Bordeaux.

Sierra Leone international Mohamed Buya Turay and Clermont striker Adrian Grbic are also on Rangers' radar, with Dundee United star Lawrence Shankland rounding out the list.

Shankland has previously been tipped for the top by his former team-mate Steven Thompson, who said: "Lawrence was at St Mirren with me and he’s kicked on brilliantly.

"He’s always had the ability to be a really good finisher and that predatory instinct with both feet and his head. The one thing he didn’t always have when he was younger was the penny hadn’t dropped in terms of what it takes to be a top athlete.

"I’m not just talking about his body but mentally as well. I think now, certainly, his condition has improved.

"If you want to be a top footballer nowadays, you’ve got to devote yourself to it. I think he’s trying to make the best of his career now because when you’re young it’s difficult to get in that mindset.

"I’m delighted for him getting his Scotland caps and his goal record over the last few years is just incredible. I’ll be amazed if Dundee United hang onto him after the summer.
