MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to pay out £6million to season ticket holders if their final four Premier League games are cancelled or played behind closed doors.

The club have been in discussions with the Manchester United Supporters' Trust about the best way to reimburse supporters if this happened.

United have 50,000 season ticket holders collectively paying £1.5million per match at Old Trafford.

The coronavirus has caused a sporting lockdown and while there is a clear will to complete the season, it could be cancelled or have the final games played without fans.

But United do not want to leave loyal season ticket holders effectively out of pocket having paid to watch every home league game.

A United spokesman said: “In light of the disruption caused by coronavirus, the club is reviewing dates, policies and procedures around season ticket renewals for next season, along with the administrative processes should games that are currently postponed, be either cancelled or played behind closed doors. We are consulting with MUST as part of that review.

“We look forward to the resumption of football when we are advised it is safe and appropriate. In the meantime our priority remains the health of fans, players, staff, and our wider communities.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by COVID-19, as well as those fighting in the front line against this virus on behalf of all of us, and we urge all our fans to continue following Government advice.”

The Supporters' Trust has had an increasingly close and positive relationship with the club in recent years to resolve fans concerns.

MUST issued a statement which read: "We are in discussion with Manchester United regarding season ticket renewals and related issues arising from the coronavirus pandemic.”

The Trust have also invited feedback from season ticket holders.
