Official: La Liga suspended indefinitely

The Spanish Football Association have this afternoon confirmed that all professional football across the country has been suspended until further notice.

Football grinds to a halt

The outbreak of COVID-19 (more commonly referred to as the coronavirus) has wreaked havoc across the football world over the course of the last fortnight.

The 'top-5' European leagues have been brought to a complete standstill, as authorities attempt to contain further spread of the virus.

A host of players plying their trade in Italy's Serie A have already been confirmed as having tested positive for COVID-19, with Sampdoria having been particularly-harshly hit.

The Premier League's most high-profile cases, meanwhile, have come in the form of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi.

'Convinced that we will finish the season'

The first confirmed positive tests for COVID-19 in La Liga, though, did not arrive until March 15th.

In a post across the club's social media platforms, Valencia announced that 5 individuals from their first-team squad and staff setup had been diagnosed with the virus:

This news, though, was swiftly followed by an announcement on the part of Javier Tebas, during which the La Liga president attempted to reassure fans of Spanish football that the campaign would be played to completion, one way or another:

'It's not the moment to debate if the season will end or not but I think we'll finish La Liga. We'll see what happens on Tuesday in the UEFA meeting.'

'I think that we'll finish the competition but it's not the time to talk about it. l'm keeping contact with Italy and Germany. We're waiting for Tuesday, the UEFA meeting and the decisions they take, but I'm convinced that we will finish the season.'

RFEF setting an example

As outlined above, however, the latest update on the part of the RFEF (Spanish Football Association) has thrown such plans into major doubt.

It has this afternoon been confirmed that professional football across all levels in Spain has been suspended until further notice.

This comes following an agreement that sporting activities cannot safely resume until it can be assured that they 'do not pose any risk to health':

The Monitoring Commission provided for in the current RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement AGREES the suspension of professional soccer competitions until the competent authorities of the Government of Spain and the General State Administration consider that they can be resumed and this does not pose any risk to health.

Both the RFEF and LaLiga want to show their greatest public gratitude to all those who are dedicating their best efforts to provide essential services to Spaniards, and we also wish to show our sincere remembrance for all the deceased and a warm embrace from the world of soccer for all families. they are losing loved ones.
