Barcelona aim to negotiate salary cut with players

The Barcelona board are in discussions with the captains of the club over a possible reduction to the players' salaries due to the economic impact of the coronavirus.

With football currently suspended, the Blaugrana do not foresee being able to cover their budget which exceeds one billion euros.

One of the measures that was discussed at a board meeting on Wednesday was to discuss the possibility of a wage cut until the end of the season.

The weekend has seen conversations take place between the captains of this side to entertain this possibility.

The reaction from the players has been positive, but no agreement can currently be reached without knowing for how long official competitions will be suspended.

This is a key point because the club's losses would only come from the termination of LaLiga Santander and the Champions League, neither of which, at this time, are guaranteed.

LaLiga and UEFA both believe the season can be completed in the coming months before the summer, but it is impossible to predict under what circumstances, and this is key in defining the money from television rights that account for so much of the clubs' revenue.
