Carlisle earn overdue home win against 10-man Newport

Carlisle ended a run of just one win in their last nine League Two games at home with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Newport.

Omari Patrick got the Cumbrians off to a perfect start with an early goal and his strike partner Josh Kayode added a second before the break from the penalty spot.

Newport were further hampered by having to play more than half the game with 10 men after defender Ryan Inniss was sent off.

Carlisle started brightly with Patrick producing some threatening runs down the right, and a corner on that side led to a fifth-minute goal as Elliot Watt’s accurate ball found Patrick, who guided his header into the bottom left corner of the net.

Newport goalkeeper Tom King prevented Gethin Jones’ cross reaching Kayode but Carlisle increased their advantage with a 33rd-minute penalty after Dale Gorman had bundled Jack Bridge over a couple of yards inside the area. On-loan Rotherham forward Kayode planted the spot-kick emphatically past King inside the right-hand post.

Newport were reduced to 10 men just before the break when Inniss was shown a straight red card by referee Graham Salisbury for a wild challenge on Kayode.

Carlisle applied the pressure after the break and twice King was called on to save on-target shots by Lewis Alessandra, while the Exiles’ best chance of the game saw substitute Joss Labadie volley over from 10 yards after a defensive header had gone astray.
