Ryan Lowe delighted with Plymouth response

Promotion-chasing Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe praised his side’s response as they beat Grimsby 3-0 to soar to back to third in League Two with 10 games remaining.

Tyreeq Bakinson opened the scoring with a headed goal and a double from recalled striker Ryan Hardie pushed Plymouth, who lost to Bradford on Saturday, back into the top three.

Hardie, Luke Jephcott and sub Joe Edwards all hit the frame as Argyle pressed for an even bigger win.

Lowe admitted: “It’s always nice when you win at home, score three goals, get three points and keep a clean sheet.

“We asked the boys to bounce back from Saturday and they did. Overall I was really pleased with the reaction of the boys tonight.”

Only four of Hardie’s 12 league appearances this season have come as a starter but Lowe said: “I wouldn’t class Ryan Hardie as a super sub.

“The times when he has played he might not have had those opportunities. But we’ve worked with him and the lads are getting used to him now and where he wants to get the ball.

“Overall, pleased with Ryan. He scored two good goals. I know Luke Jephcott was after the other one but the linesman and ref have given it to Ryan.

“It is what it is. It’s football. They’ll be fighting for it themselves but I am just pleased the two of them combined very well, and we’re scoring goals, and most importantly it’s a team effort that they get the three points.

“Fair play to Ollie (Grimsby boss Ian Holloway) for giving us credit where I think credit is due. Fair play to them, they have come here and had a go, they haven’t just sat off us.”

Former Argyle boss Holloway took the blame for his tactical approach.

He said: “I should have played three at the back and not gone with just the two centre-halves.

“I have watched Plymouth and thought they might be weakened with two out. But they weren’t. I am envious of their confidence.

“Funnily enough I thought we started quite well. We knew we were up against a very good team.

“We tried to close them, tried to press them but to be honest I got my team selection wrong. I got my formation wrong because they were better than I thought they were.

“I thought we could impose ourselves on it but at the end of the day I left my two centre-halves with two on them.

“When we went forward it was very clear that their shape and their practice of what they have been doing left my two centre-halves exposed.

“I got that wrong and by the time we had chance to do anything about it? It was at least 2-0 I think.

“The second goal was a killer because he scooted away and scored but all I can do is say well done to them. I thought we did much better in the second half.

“They are a very good team and we are nowhere near as good as them at the minute and that’s as honest as I can be about it.”
