Moore hails Doncaster’s win over Wycombe their best of the season

Darren Moore declared Doncaster’s 3-1 triumph over fellow promotion hopefuls Wycombe as his side’s best win of the season.

Strikes from Niall Ennis and Kieran Sadlier plus an own goal from Jason McCarthy helped Rovers ride out a difficult start to the game and secure a comfortable win.

Adebayo Akinfenwa had equalised for Wycombe early in the second half but the hosts were unfazed as they returned to winning ways after back-to-back defeats.

Moore was most pleased with the contrast in age and experience between the two sides with Rovers coming out on top.

He said: “When I look back on the game we’ve probably had four players on the pitch under the age of 20, development squad players – Danny Amos, Niall Ennis, Jacob Ramsey – you’re talking young players against real experience that looked to come and manage the game as they did.

“It’s a massive three points and probably the best for me this season because of who we had on the pitch and what they were up against.

“I’m absolutely delighted.

“Their experience and know-how that they had on the pitch, my boys stood up to it and dug out a result.

“It went to 1-1 and the players showed great resilience and belief to turn it around, go and get the second goal and then go to get the third.

“It turned out to be a convincing win but it was far from it because we had to work so hard for it.”

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth pointed to Doncaster’s first two goals as major moments in the contest for differing reasons.

Ainsworth labelled Ennis’ strike as a suckerpunch after feeling Wycombe had been the dominant side in the contest.

And after Akinfenwa had levelled, Ainsworth claimed Sadlier’s goal for Doncaster should have been ruled out for offside.

“There was only one team in it during the first half. We were much the better side,” he said.

“It was the best we have played going at a team for a while, but their goal right at the end of the half was a sucker punch.

“In the second half, there was then a huge moment when they scored from a free-kick to make it 2-1 and I’ve looked back at it and it was offside. That really put us on the back foot.

“We needed the assistant to get that right. Both teams were on the wrong end of some decisions, but that one was a game changing one.”

With his goal, Akinfenwa became Wycombe’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Football League.

Ainsworth said: “Getting the Football League record is a special moment for him.

“He was struggling with his knee and that’s why we rested him from the start, but I thought he was exceptional when he came on.”
