Frustrated Ferguson rues ‘missed opportunity’

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson was left hugely frustrated after his side were held to a 1-1 draw at Burton.

Mo Eisa gave Posh a precious lead six minutes into the second half only for the visitors to throw away two points when Burton captain John Brayford headed home from a corner.

In a game of few clear chances in blustery conditions, it was defensive mistakes that left both managers frustrated.

“It was a game that I felt, up to the first hour of the game, we were totally dominant, said Ferguson.

“We got ahead and then we have lost a terrible goal from a set-piece.

“Goals do change games and that gave them confidence and belief and in the end we could have lost it, but I have just said to the players that in the next 10 games we can’t ever do that again. We can’t miss the opportunities that we were given today to win a game of football.

“A man has got a job to do and pick up someone from a set-piece. It starts from our throw-in, a terrible throw. We gave it away and they get a corner. From nothing they got back into the game.

“It is a real missed opportunity today and two points dropped, no doubt about it.

“One thing that stands out for me this season is that we haven’t scored enough goals from set-pieces and we have conceded too many. Set-pieces are a big part of the game. That is something that is a real disappointment”

Burton boss Nigel Clough was also left unhappy at his side after a defensive error proved costly and made for a tricky afternoon before Brayford rescued a point.

“I thought they had the better of it in the first half” he said. “We stuck with the formation from last week but changed it after half an hour and thought we looked better from there on.

“Very frustrated to concede another goal from a mistake. That’s three in the last two games and then we are facing an uphill battle, but I thought we got better as the game went on and in the last half an hour or so I thought we played very well.

“We had to defend very well in the first half because they had the majority of the ball without creating too many clear-cut chances.

“It was difficult conditions to create stuff today, for both teams. Both were trying to get it down and play.

“We started the second half well, but five minutes in we make a mistake and then we are chasing the game.

“That’s all that is holding us back. We know we are capable of scoring goals and creating chances, we have just got to stop defensive mistakes.”
