Five-star Oldham cruise to victory against Newport

Two goals from Danny Rowe and one each from Zak Dearnley, Tom Hamer and Jonny Smith ensured Oldham ended a turbulent week on a high with a 5-0 win over Newport.
The hosts, entering the game under the threat of administration, went close to opening the scoring after four minutes when Dearnley’s header rebounded off a post.
Oldham went ahead in the 25th minute when Rowe rounded goalkeeper Tom King and fired home through a congested goalmouth.
Two minutes later the lead was doubled. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson raced down the left and sent in an inch-perfect first-time cross towards former Manchester United colleague Dearnley, who neatly side-footed home on the volley.
Seven minutes after half-time, Rowe twisted past his marker and shot low underneath King and Hamer was next on the scoresheet in the 62nd minute with a deflected effort that looped in.
Rowe hit a post before Smith dribbled into the area and shot home low off the far post in the 83rd minute, while Newport’s best effort was a Matt Dolan shot that went wide in stoppage time.
