Jackett praises substitute Harness for impact against MK Dons

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett praised substitute Marcus Harness after he came off the bench to seal a 3-1 win at home to 10-man MK Dons.

Goals from Andy Cannon, his first for the club, John Marquis and Harness helped Pompey move back into the Sky Bet League One playoff places.

Jackett said: “Marcus made a big impact from the bench and that was very good.

“It was not the type of goal he would usually score but he showed good strength to take it around the goalkeeper and is getting stronger all the time.

“It was a really good game. Nobody could say it was dull or not entertaining but I thought we deserved to win.

“You are judged on wins, however they come, but it was a really good advert for League One football with chances at both ends.

“We had more and I am pleased to say the three goals we got proved decisive. We always needed that extra goal to put MK Dons away and overall, I am very pleased.”

Pompey remain unbeaten in the league at home this season – their best run at Fratton Park for 18 years.

The hosts got off to the perfect start when Cannon opened the scoring in only the fourth minute after Dons defender Jordan Houghton had been caught in possession.

The visitors levelled in first-half stoppage time. Rhys Healey was felled in the box by Ross McCrorie and Alex Gilbey was on hand to lash in the rebound after Alex Bass had saved his penalty.

Pompey were back in front four minutes after half-time as Marquis slotted in via the inside of the post from McCrorie’s pull back.

Dons defender Carlton Morris was shown a straight red card for hauling down Marquis when the Pompey striker was through on goal.

Harness then rounded goalkeeper Lee Nicholls to seal the points in stoppage time.

MK Dons manager Russell Martin said: “I am really proud of the players. I thought the performance was really good and thought we dominated most of the game.

“To come here and have the chances we did and the possession we did, the territory we had for most of the game is a sign of how far we have come.

“But my overall feeling is one of disappointment at the goals we conceded.

“The first one is what it is and I will take responsibility as I ask the boys to play out from the back, but the second one as just not good enough.

“It is a tough place to come against a side fighting for promotion and there is no way it was a 3-1 game.”
