Healey takes the plaudits as Martin savours victory

There was only one name on Russell Martin’s lips as his MK Dons side secured their third consecutive league win with a 1-0 victory over Bolton.

Rhys Healey scored for the fifth straight league game as the hosts dominated the contest and now sit 13 points clear of the relegation places.

And Martin was quick to heap praise on the 25-year-old who has now netted 10 league goals this campaign, even if he believes he can improve in one area in particular.

“Rhys Healey could have had a hat-trick today and his approach is fantastic,” Martin said.

“He comes in with a smile on his face every day. If he could just learn the offside rule he would be even better.”

In a game of few clear-cut chances, Carlton Morris should have given the hosts the lead in the first half before Lee Nicholls provided a key late save to prevent Dennis Politic levelling the scores.

And, despite admitting his side were not at their best, Martin was pleased with how the Dons managed to see things out.

He added: “I thought we were in control for the whole game, and we are going to come up against more of these sides this season who will sit back and make it difficult.

“We were lacking our usual intensity at times and we made a few mistakes, but we said at half-time that they would get tired and the chances would come – which fortunately they did.

“I was really pleased with the last 30 minutes because I thought we controlled the game, and could have perhaps scored a few more goals and I don’t think anyone would have complained.

“I would have liked us to be more clinical but that isn’t going to happen every week. It’s a sign of how far we’ve come that we’re not at our best but still won.”

For Bolton, however, their fourth consecutive league defeat leaves them five points adrift at the bottom of the table but manager Keith Hill is remaining upbeat.

He said: “Our recent run is a major concern and nobody wants to have a run like the one we’ve been on.

“We never predicted a run like this but we have to understand that these things do happen. It was a difficult January and we haven’t really recovered – we’re still trying to catch up.

“It’s all about results and they’ve obviously not been good enough, but there’s a lot of hope, effort and desire to represent our supporters.

“There’s always light at the end of the tunnel. I get inspired by recoveries and the beginning of new eras, but we know that results right here right now haven’t been good enough.”
