Karl Robinson: Oxford got their flow back in win over Wimbledon

Oxford boss Karl Robinson admitted his team had “got their flow back” after they beat AFC Wimbledon 5-0 at the Kassam Stadium.

Matty Taylor and Nathan Holland both scored twice as the U’s recorded their best home win of the campaign and their first league double of the season.

They had only won once in the league since a 2-1 victory at Wimbledon at the end of December, but there was no stopping Robinson’s men after Taylor and Holland scored in quick succession just after the half hour.

Both players scored again in the second half, with James Henry also netting, to bring Oxford to within five points of the play-off places in League One.

Robinson said: “We’ve not played any differently really – we’ve just taken our chances tonight.

“It’s a fantastic win for us and, without being disrespectful to Wimbledon, it could have been so much more with the chances we created.

“Their keeper has made some great saves.

“But we’ve not been too far off that lately so to my mind we’ve only carried on our good form. It’s just that the results hadn’t been coming before.

“But the league table doesn’t half look different now to how it was on Saturday.”

Robinson said he could see signs of the old swagger coming back in last Saturday’s defeat by Sunderland.

“We’ve found our flow back,” he confirmed. “The continuity is slowly coming back.

“Whatever happens at the end of this season I’m proud of what my players have achieved and how far we have come this season.”

The Dons had come off the back of a surprise 2-2 draw at promotion-chasing Rotherham last weekend, and other useful results against other teams near the top.

And Dons boss Glyn Hodges admitted he didn’t expect a night like this.

“It was a bad day at the office,” Hodges said.

“And we’d been performing really well. So I didn’t see that coming.

“We were coming here full of confidence.

“We apologise to our fans for a performance like that.”

Only three or four excellent stops by Joe Day prevented a much heavier defeat.

Wimbledon remain seven points clear of third-from-bottom Tranmere, but the size of the defeat does not help their survival prospects.

Hodges said: “The keeper has played well for the last couple of games, and he made some good saves again.

“We had a good opportunity with Joe Pigott in the first half and nearly got one near the end.

“I was just thinking ‘could we nick a goal’ because goal difference could be important at the end of the season.

“But we’ll have to take it on the chin, dust ourselves down and go again.

“But Oxford are a good side.”
