Danny Rose effort enough as Mansfield earn Newport victory

A Danny Rose goal and some backs-to-the-wall defending earned gritty Mansfield three vital points towards Sky Bet League Two safety as they saw off Newport 1-0 amid the wind and rain of Storm Dennis.
The defeat left Newport without a goal in four league matches and gave Stags boss Graham Coughlan only his third win in his 13 games in charge.
Newport adapted quicker to the conditions but failed to test debut-making goalkeeper Aidan Stone with the wind behind them in the first 45 minutes.
Mansfield grew into the game and took the lead after 29 minutes when Micky Demetriou sliced the ball in midfield to spark a home break.
Nicky Maynard had a shot blocked but Rose made no mistake with the follow-up, slamming home a low finish from 16 yards.
The home side ended the half in command with goalkeeper Tom King keeping out further shots from Rose and Maynard.
King also kept out a low Krystian Pearce effort and – at full stretch – a Rose header before Dale Gorman poked a rare Newport chance wide just after the hour mark before Mansfield withstood a late onslaught.
