Former Scotland and Celtic star Jackie McNamara has been rushed to hospital with an alleged bleed to the brain.

The 46-year-old was taken to hospital in York and then transferred to another hospital in Hull after collapsing at his front door.

McNamara was returning from from walking his dog on Saturday morning when he fell to the ground and emergency services were called.

His friend John Hartson, who played alongside him for Celtic, said: "Worried sick for my former teammate and great friend Jackie McNamara who collapsed at home Saturday with a bleed on the brain.

"My thoughts are with his wife Samantha and the children."

An update was supplied by McNamara's daughter on Monday night and wrote on her father's Twitter account: "Thank you all for your kind words and support.

"My dad is getting the best care possible, as you all can understand this is difficult for us as a family and request privacy at this time."

A source close to McNamara told the Daily Record: "He has been taken to hospital to undergo an operation.

"Jackie was out walking the dog on Saturday near his home in York.

"He became unwell quite quickly and he headed back to his house.

"But he must have been really poorly because he did not make it back into the house.

"He collapsed on the doorstep and his family found him.

"So this is a really worrying time for his family and his friends.

"We're just hoping that he can come through this."

McNamara is currently working as a consultant for Dunfermline Athletic, the club where his illustrious playing career began in the early 1990s.

He joined Celtic in 1995 and went on to play for the Bhoys for over a decade.

McNamara also won 33 caps for Scotland.

During his playing days, he also represented Wolves, Aberdeen, Falkirk and Partick Thistle before turning to management.

He was most recently in charge of York City between 2015 and 2016, before stepping into a behind-the-scenes role until 2018.

He has business roles elsewhere, working as an agent and also runs a pub in Spain with his former Celtic team-mate Simon Donnelly.

"Jackie works really hard and has a lot on his shoulders," the friend continued.

"There is also a lot of travelling that he has to do.

"We still don't know the full facts and we are waiting to hear results of the operation."
