Adams hails Morecambe spirit after Mansfield draw

Morecambe boss Derek Adams praised his side’s spirit after they came from behind to earn a 1-1 home draw against Mansfield.
Adams saw his team stage a late rally, with Alex Kenyon securing a point with an 86th-minute goal after Joe Riley’s first Mansfield goal on the hour had given the Stags the lead.
“For three quarters of the game I thought we were the better side and we probably should have had the three points at the end,” Adams said.
“For long spells we dominated and got into good areas but didn’t find that killer touch.
“We have had enough chances to win not just one football match but two, but they got the goal when they had their best spell of the game and we had to come from behind again.
“We didn’t play as well in the second half. We didn’t pass the ball as quickly as we did in the first half, but we changed formation and showed spirit at the death and got the goal we deserved with a good corner from Jordan Cranston.
“We finished the game on top and had four very, very good chances to win the match with their keeper making three or four great saves to keep us out.
“It was disappointing not to win the game, but we showed spirit again and kept our good run of home form going.”
Mansfield assistant boss Joe Dunne said his side were disappointed not to see the game out.
He said: “It was bitterly disappointing not to win the game after taking the lead like we did.
“When we took the lead we were in control of the game and it looked like we were going to go on and see the game out, but we let it slip, which is the way things are going at the minute for us. It’s a couple of points that we should have had in the bank again.
“We had a real impetus at that stage, but we let it slip and in the end we had to see some heroic defending to keep the point
“There were some positives in the second half and we worked our system, but we caused a lot of problems for ourselves in the final stages of the game and, although there were some positives and signs of improvement, there are things we need to work on.”
Riley opened the scoring with a close-range finish after Christoffer Mafoumbi could only parry a Krystian Pearce header out.
Ryan Sweeney then saw an effort cleared off the line as Mansfield looked for a second.
But Morecambe hit back when substitute Kenyon got in ahead of Bobby Olejnik and his marker to turn home Cranston’s corner.
