Charlie Kirk snatches last-gasp victory for high-flying Crewe

Charlie Kirk hit a stoppage-time winner for Crewe as the front-runners came from behind to beat Oldham in a 2-1 victory.
It looked like the Railwaymen would have to settle for a point after James Jones profited from a handling error by Oldham goalkeeper Zeus De La Paz to level six minutes after Jonny Smith had edged the visitors ahead early in the second half.
But Kirk wriggled clear on the left and cut in before firing into the bottom corner in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
Kirk had posed an early threat for Crewe, first taking down Oli Finney’s flick-on and launching a volley onto the roof of the net.
However, Oldham were ahead three minutes after the restart when Gevaro Nepomuceno was clear on the right flank by Danny Rowe and the winger pulled the ball back from the by-line for Smith to turn home from six yards out.
The Latics’ advantage was short-lived after Kirk worked an opening inside the box for Jones, whose shot squirmed through the keeper’s hands and over the line for a 54th-minute leveller.
Callum Ainley was thwarted by De La Paz, who turned around his low drive in stoppage time, before Kirk won it in dramatic fashion.
