Darren Ferguson lauds Peterborough performance

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson praised a “fantastic” performance as his side demolished Ipswich 4-1 at Portman Road.

It moved Posh up a place into third in League One, leapfrogging their opponents in the process and made it four wins on the trot for them.

Two goals from Sammie Szmodics, which included a tap in following a dreadful error from Ipswich goalkeeper Will Norris, plus further strikes from the division’s leading goal scorer Ivan Toney and Siriki Dembele was followed by a penalty from James Norwood for Ipswich.

Ferguson said: “To come to Ipswich and to score four goals was a fantastic result for the team. It was a real team effort.

“Today we felt that if we could get the first goal it would give us a right chance and that was how it turned out.

“I thought we were comfortable after the third goal and I thought our pressing was really good but it was a really good team effort and we are in a good place at the moment. To come to Ipswich and win in that manner is fantastic for the players.

“The front three… They were a handful.”

Ipswich boss Paul Lambert conceded that Peterborough were the better side but said the team should not be downbeat as they are only five points off the top of the division.

Lambert said: “We lost to the better team. The goals were disappointing. The second goal, you can’t legislate for that, it was a big moment in the game for us. That gave them the catalyst to hold on.

“We started the second half not too bad but they scored a good third goal and that put us on the back foot.

“But we should not downbeat. We are five points off the top and 15 games to go and a hell of a lot of football to play, there’s nothing in it as there are a hell of a lot of games left to play, let’s see what happens.

“It’s a difficult league and you’re not going to get it all your own way if it was that easy a massive club like Sunderland would have done it.

“The lads will bounce back it’s not a massive disaster and there’s a long way to go but we deserved to lose today.”
