Ferguson hails “professional performance”

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson feels his side are hitting form at the right time as they consolidated their play-off place with a 2-0 win at Accrington.

On-loan Bristol City striker Sammie Szmodics scored after 11 minutes, his effort taking a deflection off Mark Hughes and sneaking into the near post.

They extended their lead six minutes into the second half when Ivan Toney beat the offside trap and squared for Joe Ward to tap home what proved a vital goal.

It is now three wins out of three for Posh while Stanley still haven’t chalked up a league win in 2020 as they fight near the bottom.

Ferguson said: “I am delighted with the win, it was a professional performance against a good team.

“It’s never easy to come to Accrington on a Tuesday night and there was a lot of tired legs out there after our win at Rotherham on Saturday.

“It is a worry but we scored a good early goal, a great run from Siriki Dembele and a good finish from Sammie. They then got on top and we spoke about it at half-time.

“Then Wardy couldn’t miss really but it’s great for him and we have seen it out.

“That’s three wins on the bounce, a clean sheet and, as a manager, you can’t ask for more.

“We are back to keeping clean sheets and scoring goals and we are all in it together.

“We have come out of a sticky situation where were hadn’t won in six games and now we have won three games out of three and we needed that if we wanted to stay in there. Momentum is key and it breeds confidence.

“We always knew this period would be pivotal and we have beat Wycombe, Rotherham and now Accrington and it’s a big game at Ipswich on Saturday.”

Accrington boss John Coleman, who won manager of the month in December, was left disappointed as his team’s poor form continued.

He said: “They were fortunate to score the goal they did as it took a massive deflection and we had chances before and after that.

“In the first half I think we were the better team but for the last few games we have conceded early in the second half and that’s been our downfall. It boosted their confidence and we got ragged after that.

“They are a good side and they could have had more but I believe, if we hadn’t conceded so early in the second half, that we would have had a chance to get something out of the game.

“I can’t fault my players’ work-rate or effort but we are conceding poor goals. All you can do is keep battling.

“We are trying to bring players in before Friday, we are trying really hard, we need a couple.”
