John Yems delivered half-time hairdryer before Crawley comeback against Grimsby

Crawley head coach John Yems admitted it took a half-time rocket to get his side going as they overturned a 2-1 deficit to beat Grimsby 3-2 in an entertaining clash at the Broadfield Stadium.

The Reds went into the interval behind after goals from Elliott Whitehouse and James Hanson gave Grimsby the advantage after Ollie Palmer’s opener.

But Crawley pushed the Mariners back in the second period and further goals from Palmer and strike partner Ashley Nadesan gave them victory.

Yems had demanded a reaction after describing the 2-1 defeat at Walsall the previous week as “diabolical” and he said: “I am delighted with the team performance.

“I can’t say what I said at half time.. I almost got myself arrested.

“Grimsby set up well in the first half and deserved their lead, but second half we stuck with it and got the result.

“We were 2-1 down at half-time but we came back to win, I like to measure it like that.”

Yems, who took over from Gabriele Cioffi in early December, is keen to improve Crawley’s away form as the Reds have not won any of their last 11 league games on the road.

The Reds are at in-form Plymouth on Tuesday and Yems added: “If you can’t look forward to those type of games then you shouldn’t be in football.”

Grimsby boss Ian Holloway felt his men were driven too deep in the second half, but refused to be too critical.

“It was a really good game and Crawley pushed us back,” he said.

“That’s life and it was a terrific Crawley comeback. I don’t want to see a sad face. We played well and I was very pleased with that performance.

“You need to try and put these types of games to bed. Crawley took over and we just went a little bit deep.”

The Mariners have picked up no points from their last two games, having started Holloway’s reign with seven points from his first three matches in charge.

He added: “I may still bring in one or two players and it is onwards and upwards.

“Hopefully we’ll have a couple of players back from injury for our home game against Stevenage on Tuesday.

“It is very frustrating, I know we’re better despite not getting the points in the last couple of games.”
