Nigel Clough grateful for a point against Accrington

Burton boss Nigel Clough was grateful to see John Brayford’s first-half header earn his side a share of the spoils from a 1-1 draw with Accrington to make it 10 points from 12.

Albion had not played for 10 days since beating MK Dons and Clough felt that the enforced lay-off had an adverse effect on his side.

“It was a hard slog” he said as both sides eventually cancelled each other out.

Clough added: “A typical end of January sort of game. When you go one-nil down at home it’s difficult to get back into the game.

“We managed to do that and then there weren’t many chances after that. I thought it was just too well organised, good teams just lacking that little bit of quality in the final third. Certainly we were and we didn’t create anywhere near as much as we normally do.

“The 10-day break we have had seemed to work against us in the first half an hour.

“We were very slow starting it. We gave them a goal and it was only in patches that we managed to dominate the game and put them under any concerted pressure.

“We often say when teams come to us after a break that they might be rusty and we need to take advantage of that. I think that was probably us today the other way around. We were nowhere near it in the first 15 minutes.”

And it was in that opening quarter of an hour that Stanley struck, striker Dion Charles capitalising on some loose Burton defending to rifle in a low shot before Albion responded.

For Stanley boss Coleman it was an end to a losing run that had seen his side lose all three League games since beating Burton in December.

“We’d have taken it before the game,” Coleman said of the hard-earned point.

“Not many teams will come here and do what we did, keep the ball off them for half an hour and dominate the game. We scored a good goal and could have had another one and we have gone to sleep from a set play which is disappointing so it is mixed emotions really.

“When you have led and get pegged back it always leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth but I think we have got to be proud of the way that we played.

“I think on the balance of play we probably deserved to win but second half it became bitty and a bit of a war of attrition in midfield. We have stopped their winning League run here and we have stopped the rot ourselves. We have got to try and build on it for a massive game on Tuesday.”
