Alexander rues Salford’s lack of ruthlessness in final third against Oldham

Salford boss Graham Alexander rued a lack of ruthlessness after his side were held 1-1 at home by Greater Manchester rivals Oldham.
Danny Rowe pounced to earn Oldham a share of the spoils after the Ammies had struck early on.
Salford created the better chances overall but could not hang on to register a fourth win in seven games.
“It definitely feels like two points dropped,” said Alexander.
“I thought we did more than enough to have won the game, but we weren’t quite clinical enough in the final third.
“We were looking to push on in the second half, but in the end we’ve conceded a poor goal and it’s cost us two points.
“We didn’t do enough with all the possession we had. We got ourselves in front early in the game but as it went on into the second half, we should have seen the victory out.
“It’s disappointing of course but we just seem to be getting punished for any slight error we make at the moment.
“We were the dominant team pretty much throughout, but in the end we’ve just not been ruthless enough.
“We were untidy at times, and that’s not something I want to see. We’ll have to improve from this.”
Salford struck after 15 minutes when Tom Hamer dragged back Adam Rooney in the box, and although Zeus De La Paz saved the striker’s penalty, the loose ball was eventually bundled home from close range by Brandon Thomas-Asante.
Oldham attempted a swift response with Hamer meeting a smart Jonny Smith cross but headed narrowly off target.
Soon after the restart, Oldham went close when Smith’s angled strike was beaten away by Letheren.
Salford almost made it 2-0 when substitute Craig Conway forced De La Paz into a brave save before Rowe went on to earn Oldham a point in the 83rd minute.
Oldham boss Dino Maamria felt his side could have gone on to nick victory after Rowe’s late leveller.
He said: “That game was there for the taking. We finished the game really strongly and I thought we could have gone to secure a victory.
“It was a really poor first half from us, it was a performance which went against everything that we had done in our preparations.
“We went behind early in the game, and that gave Salford the momentum.
“We were much better in the second half, though, and all of our substitutes were fantastic on the day.
“We got ourselves back into the game and we had the impetus to go on and get a result in that final half-an-hour.
“Unfortunately we didn’t get that second goal we probably deserved, but I think everyone once again saw the potential there is here at this club.
“I’ve backed myself to get it right here, and I will. It’s going to take time, though, I know that.”
