Kennedy thrilled with his Macclesfield side despite surrendering lead late on

Mark Kennedy was delighted with his first point as Macclesfield head coach in a 1-1 draw, despite Crewe’s stoppage-time equaliser denying them victory.
The high-flying visitors only snatched a point five minutes into added time but Kennedy was staying positive about the result against one of League Two’s title contenders.
“I’m really happy,” said the rookie boss after only his second game in charge. “I suppose you’d expect me to come here and be really disappointed but I’m delighted with the lads, it was an amazing performance.
“For 45 minutes in the first half we were outstanding in the manner and the style we played in. I’m not going to say we were miles better than Crewe but I was really pleased with what we did in the first half, it was really positive for us.
“I’m absolutely delighted with them, they were unbelievable.
“Credit to Crewe, they’re a great side and they’ll go home saying they deserved a draw and we can’t argue with that.
“From an in-possession perspective I thought we were excellent, from an out-of-possession perspective I thought we were even better, and that’s from a coach whose side conceded a goal in the 95th minute.”
Hosts Macclesfield had led at the break thanks to a 44th-minute own goal from Paul Green. And though Crewe had made all the running in the second half, it was not until the last of five added-on minutes that substitute Callum Ainley finally forced in a deserved equaliser.
And Crewe boss David Artell was happy enough to take their reward, insisting it could make all the difference come the end of the season.
“It’s the old cliche isn’t it, a game of two halves,” said the Alex manager. “The first half was probably the worst 45 minutes of football I’ve seen this year – not just from us, I thought both teams were terrible.
“And they scored a terrible goal from our point of view, the amount of slashed clearances and the final touch was a comedy of errors and it summed up the whole half.
“I’ve just said to the lads, you don’t know how important that point might be, it might be the difference between a very good season and not a good season – it might be the difference between first and second, third and fourth or seventh and eighth.
“It’s a point we didn’t have after ninety-four-and-a-half minutes, and it’s a point closer to where we want to be.”
