Hodges delighted with ‘immense’ performance of AFC Wimbledon captain Pigott

Glyn Hodges heaped praise on the “immense” Joe Pigott after the captain’s goal inspired AFC Wimbledon to a 1-0 win over Peterborough.

The striker’s fourth goal in five games took the Dons five points clear of relegation danger, firing past Christy Pym on the turn to keep his purple patch with the armband going.

But Wimbledon had to scrap for the points, far from at their best, with Sam Szmodics and Ivan Toney coming close to equalising.

“The 20th minute was when we first had any input in the game, where Joe Pigott had a tackle on halfway and that galvanised the fans and got us going, then we seemed to be a different team,” Hodges said.

“Joe’s performance was immense as captain. He showed some composure, took another touch and that’s what good goalscorers do – he tucked it away brilliantly.

“We’re young, we’re naive, we make mistakes, but they put their heart and soul in it and that’s what you want to get rewarded.

“When you don’t score that second goal, you leave yourself open. There’s never a dull moment here.

“Debutant Mads Sorensen is a big, strong Scandinavian and they’re suited for this game. They always seem to do well when they come over to England.

“He did well today, a few tussles with Toney, stood up and showed how you should defend.”

Posh, meanwhile, are in wretched form – winless in their last six and without a goal in five of those as they slip down the League One table.

Such form is worrying manager Darren Ferguson, looking after a team that appears a shadow of the confident contingent that prevailed when they beat the Dons back in September.

“Earlier in the season we would have won that by three or four with the amount of chances we had in the last 30 minutes,” he said.

“I have to ask why did we wait until then. The first half was nowhere near good enough.

“We are little bit short of confidence. I said at half-time that we weren’t good enough.

“It was alright but alright is not enough. Then we went behind to a soft goal and all of a sudden, we come to life.

“There were a lot of positives in that we created chances. But things are not bouncing for us.

“Clearly there are one or two out of form. I was loyal to some but I can’t continue doing that if we get performances like today. We don’t want our season to go away from us.

“We’ll find out what we’re about in the next four games. I have to solve the problem and certainly you’d be looking at personnel changes.”
