Paul Lambert praises ‘excellent’ Ipswich after come-from-behind win at Tranmere

Paul Lambert praised the quality of Ipswich’s finishing as they came from behind to beat Tranmere 2-1.

Second-half goals from Flynn Downes and Kayden Jackson saw the visitors overturn a 1-0 deficit to secure a first away win in League One since November 5.

That kept Town within two points of Rotherham and Wycombe at the top of the table and earned praise from their manager.

“I was reasonably happy with the performance at half-time because we weren’t doing much wrong,” said Lambert.

“They scored from a set play which should never have been given in the first place, because the guy’s taken the throw in and he’s thrown it off the pitch, then the referee made him take it again. It didn’t make sense.

“That was the only thing they really had. The big guy’s hard to pick up, but overall we were excellent.

“The two goals were brilliant. The first was well worked. It was a great ball by Luke Garbutt, he’s been doing that all season. The second goal was a great passing move and finish.”

Lambert has come under pressure after they slipped off top spot, but he fired a shot at those who have doubted his side’s promotion credentials.

“We’ve only been beaten four (five) times this season,” he added. “It’s incredible, the form we’ve been in.

“There have only been one or two blips with a few draws. People went over the top with it, that’s for sure. They didn’t have a clue what was going on.”

Tranmere remain deep in trouble in the League One relegation zone, three points from safety.

They are yet to win in 2020 and remain winless at Prenton Park since the start of December.

Manager Micky Mellon was far from critical of his side’s performance but was left ruing their missed opportunities as they failed to build on Manny Monthe’s first-half header.

“I thought there were moments in the game that you have to take,” he said. “When you’re playing against top-class opposition, you fear at some stage their quality will maybe undo you or put you under pressure.

“But I’m only positive for our players. They’ve run their socks off, worked really, really hard and it was a tough one to take.

“I couldn’t fault their effort, desire or all the rest of it. We know the qualities Ipswich possess and if you make even half of a mistake, they punish you. They’re top-end players.

“Alex Woodyard was outstanding. He’s a good player and he’s very comfortable at this level.

“Our players stuck with it, ran their hearts out and fought really hard.”
