Ryan Lowe pleased with Plymouth progress after Mansfield win

Plymouth Argyle’s third League Two win on the spin, 3-1 at home to Mansfield, moved them up a place to fourth to the delight of manager Ryan Lowe.

Niall Canavan headed Argyle ahead after 42 minutes and also made a second half goal-line clearance to deny Nicky Maynard, with Alex Palmer beaten.

Antoni Sarcevic scored a 60th-minute penalty before substitute Andy Cook scored with an audacious strike to make it 2-1.

Argyle’s on-loan Blackpool striker Ryan Hardie sealed victory in stoppage time.

Lowe said: “It wasn’t pretty for the first 30 minutes but our keeper Alex Palmer has kept us in it and we’ve shown the character after that to go on and get the win.

“We weren’t great in the first half but it was a Plymouth Argyle performance second half, hence we won the game.

“The first half wasn’t acceptable. The lads knew that in there at half-time. I didn’t go in there shouting and raving and balling. There’s no point.

“I gave them what I needed to give them: information, tactical changes and what have you.

“You are up against Nicky Maynard, Danny Rose and CJ Hamilton so they have one of the best forward lines in the league, so they are going to cause you problems at times.

“Eoin Doyle was good the other week but those three are strong attackers but that’s what Alex Palmer is there for, to keep the ball out of the net, and he made a couple of great saves early on.

“You have to give Mansfield a little bit of credit and when you have played a Graham Coughlan team five times I think they’re going to know a little bit about how to nullify us.

“But huge credit to our lads and the character they showed to keep persevering and then – credit to them – they get the goals and the rewards, another three points.”

Frustrated Mansfield boss Graham Coughlan – the former Argyle central defender – felt his side deserved more from the game.

He said: “We were the better team, created the lots of chances but didn’t come away with three points.

“We were vulnerable at the back, three soft goals against us. We lacked conviction at one end and we were very vulnerable at the other.

“We need to dig deep and get ourselves out of this. I am questioning the lads’ character. Have they got the character to roll their sleeves up and get behind me? I will educate them and show them but have they got the stomach for the fight.

“You have to either replace personnel or you work harder on the training ground. These lads are working three times a day, we are making changes and progress – probably not as quick as I would like.

“One simple cross into our box on 40-odd minutes, you would expect us to deal with that.

“The boy’s running away from goal and we decide to challenge him in the box and we give away a penalty and one simple pass through the middle and it is game over. It is not great and it is hurting us.”
