Sunderland moved into the League One play-off places after Lynden Gooch’s stunning strike sealed a 1-0 victory at MK Dons.
Phil Parkinson’s men were backed by more than 3,000 travelling supporters at Stadium MK, and dominated large periods of the game before Gooch netted his second goal in three games 11 minutes from time.
The visitors should have taken an early lead when Luke O’Nien’s pass across the Dons’ six-yard box found defender Alim Ozturk, who fluffed his lines and bundled wide.
The hosts twice cleared off the line just after the break when Gooch’s goalbound effort was blocked by Callum Brittain, before George Williams headed away Charlie Wyke’s follow up.
Dons keeper Lee Nicholls pulled off a superb save moments later to keep out Chris Maguire’s free-kick which looked set for the top corner, as the visitors continued to look dangerous.
Sunderland found the winner when Gooch picked the ball up on the edge of the Dons box, and fired an emphatic left-footed strike into the top corner, as Parkinson’s men picked up a third successive league win.
