Chesterfield edge closer to safety

Managerless Chesterfield moved to within a point of escaping the Vanarama National League relegation zone by beating Eastleigh 2-0 at Ten Acres.
The Spitfires dominated an action-packed first half, with visiting goalkeeper Shwan Jalal kept especially busy as Michael Green, Danny Hollands and debutant James Alabi all came knocking.
But just before the break Scott Boden tested home keeper Max Stryjek with a volleyed effort and the Pole had to keep the Chesterfield striker out again not long after the restart.
Tom Denton fired the Spireites ahead in the 54th minute as he headed Boden’s cross home and Chesterfield protected their lead when Jalal made smart stops against Leyton Orient loanee Alabi.
Jalal continued to excel as he pushed out Hollands’ close-range effort and the Spireites took advantage of their hosts’ vexation by notching a second through Jonathan Smith in the 80th minute.
