Saint-Maximin’s back

Allan Saint-Maximin is back in contention for Newcastle’s Premier League clash with Chelsea on Saturday evening after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The French striker, who has not played since December 8, has returned to the squad along with defender Fabian Schar, who has shaken off a similar problem.

However, striker Dwight Gayle is likely to be sidelined for four to six weeks and defender Paul Dummett for even longer after both had scans on the hamstrings they damaged at Wolves last weekend, while defenders Javier Manquillo (hamstring) and DeAndre Yedlin (knee), midfielders Jack Colback (knee) and Ki Sung-yueng (knock) and striker Yoshinori Muto (knock) are all out and Andy Carroll is battling a hip/groin problem.

Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic remains sidelined with an adductor complaint.

The USA forward could be out of action for another couple of weeks as he works his way back to full fitness.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek remains a long-term absentee after Achilles surgery, while N’Golo Kante and Marcos Alonso will be doubtful for the trip.

Newcastle provisional squad: Dubravka, Darlow, Willems, Krafth, Lascelles, Fernandez, Lejeune, Clark, Schar, Hayden, S. Longstaff, M. Longstaff, Atsu, Ritchie, Allan, Saint-Maximin, Almiron, Joelinton, Carroll.

Chelsea provisional squad: Arrizabalaga, Zouma, Christensen, Rudiger, Tomori, Emerson, James, Azpilicueta, Alonso, Lamptey, Kovacic, Jorginho, Willian, Kante, Abraham, Hudson-Odoi, Mount, Batshuayi, Caballero, Gilmour, Barkley, Pedro, Giroud.
