Gary Bowyer challenges Bradford to react after defeat at Crawley

Gary Bowyer is seeking a reaction from Bradford players after Ollie Palmer’s brace condemned them to their first defeat in nine games with a 2-1 reverse at Crawley.

Not even the inclusion of Sky Bet League Two top goalscorer Eoin Doyle could inspire Bradford after they opted to recall him from his season-long loan at Swindon, where he bagged 23 goals in 22 league games.

The Bantams were already two goals behind when Irishman Doyle had his best chance just before the interval when Jamie Sendles-White blocked his goal-bound attempt.

Substitute Aramide Oteh pulled a late goal back for Bradford but never threatened to complete a comeback.

Bowyer said: “It wasn’t good enough I’m afraid.

“We got into some good areas in the second half but the standard of our crosses need to improve. Our failure to create decent crosses was frustrating.”

Bowyer is determined to make 31-year-old Doyle feel wanted again after his recent comments that he would be “disappointed” to leave League Two leaders Swindon.

He added:” After all the drama, it is getting back into the game of football.

“We are still in the top seven, have only one defeat in nine and we’ve worked hard to get into this position. It is how we respond to it.

“For the last 25 minutes, we had four forwards on the field. Our fans were magnificent and we need more of it next Saturday.”

Crawley head coach John Yems admitted his side`s second win in his eight games in charge had come as a much-needed boost.

The 60-year-old has got the job until the end of the season and when asked whether he has a target, he replied: “Staying in the job is my target.”

Crawley are up to 13th but Yems insisted: “I never look at the table but this is a fantastic three points.

“You don’t get carried away with it but we`re making a good fist of it. Hopefully that keeps you in work.

“Lee Bradbury (assistant head coach) and me have got them working and we`re both enjoying it.

“You cant influence the past; it is only the future I`m worried about.”

Yems is keen to build on a five-match unbeaten run, and added: “We went toe-to-toe with Bradford and it is all positive.

“We need to kick on from this. Credit to the lads, they are learning every game and we are creating chances.”
