Tottenham are likely to lose Eriksen either this month or next summer but Manchester United have given up trying to get him

Manchester United have accepted defeat in their bid to sign Tottenham's Christian Eriksen.

United have spent the last six months tracking Eriksen's situation since he made it clear he would not sign a new and improved deal with Spurs.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward tried to land the Danish midfielder last summer before the transfer deadline, but failed to strike a deal.

United refused to give up on Eriksen and are understood to have held more talks with him in recent weeks.

His contract will expire at the end of this season and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is keen to sell him to the highest bidder for around £20m to avoid losing him for free in the summer.

Eriksen is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club, with Inter Milan and Real Madrid both interested.

United were willing to meet Spurs' asking price, but it is understood Eriksen has reiterated his desire to move abroad and told the fallen giants he has no interest in moving to Old Trafford.

Eriksen, who will be 28 next month, wants a new challenge in Europe and still favours a move to Spain.

His decision to snub United could see boss Ole Gunnar Solskjear step-up his interest in Holland and Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek.

United have targeted the midfielder as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba, who is expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of this season.

Solskjaer needs midfield reinforcements but knows Real are also interested in van de Beek, which could see the two clubs involved in a game of brinkmanship in the coming weeks and months.

One option for open to United is for them to strike a deal with Real that sees them sign Pogba in return for allowing the former Premier League champions to have a free run at signing van de Beek.
