Macclesfield’s performance pleases boss Daryl McMahon

Macclesfield boss Daryl McMahon praised his side’s performance after starting 2020 with a 2-2 draw at Port Vale.

David Worrall gave Vale an early lead as his cross nestled in the top corner.

A quick-fire second-half double from Jay Harris and Joe Ironside turned the game in the visitors’ favour.

But David Amoo secured a point to ensure the struggling Silkmen’s worrying winless run stretched to nine games.

“We attacked to the last minute and we were the aggressor,” reflected McMahon.

“I thought we played some really good football, the movement was good, the combinations were good and it was a really good performance.

“We’re a resilient team. We’re really hard to beat and I think we’ve seen this over the course of the season.

“I asked the guys to just do the same in the second half, to carry on doing what they were doing because we were the better side.

“I think we showed that by the period we had just before half-time where we dominated the ball and then just after the break with the two quick goals.

“Jay Harris’ goal was a great strike and he’s a real leader in the team.

“I thought we could have got to the source of the cross and stopped the cross for the equaliser.”

Port Vale were desperate to start the year in style in front of singer Robbie Williams, who saw the Valiants sink table-toppers Swindon last time out.

But they failed to hit the high notes this time around as they were forced to settle for a point.

Assistant manager Dave Kevan said: “We’re really disappointed to draw, we didn’t really get going today.

“They caused us a few problems, but the promising thing is we haven’t been beaten despite going behind.

“We could have gone into our shells but at least we stuck at it and salvaged a point from the game.

“You have to look at everything and analyse everything and sometimes you can be unfortunate but it’s something we need to look at.

“We’re at home and you want to try and start games quickly and get on the front foot and get in front.

“We did that but credit to Macclesfield, they hit us with a wonder goal which looked to take the stuffing out of us and then they hit us again.

“You then think it’s not going to be our day, but credit to the lads for digging in and getting a point.”
