Daniel Powell bags a brace as Crewe beat Scunthorpe

Daniel Powell’s double and a tap-in from Paul Green ensured promotion-chasing Crewe returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Scunthorpe.
Lee Novak struck late to offer the Iron brief hope, only for Powell to quickly add his second to secure the Railwaymen’s 12th win of the League Two campaign.
Crewe, who had drawn their last two, dominated proceedings at Gresty Road and their margin of victory would have been greater had it not been for Rory Watson.
The visiting goalkeeper kept out a fierce blast from Harry Pickering and tipped Charlie Kirk’s rising drive over.
But he was powerless to keep out Powell’s half vollet which gave Crewe a 20th-minute lead.
Perry Ng went close with a header before he had a key role in Crewe’s second five minutes before half-time.
He won the ball in midfield and set Kirk free on the left to tee up Green.
After the restart Ng was inches away from a free-kick and Chuma Anene dragged wide from an inviting position, before Callum Ainley had a volley saved by Watson.
Novak reduced the arrears with nine minutes left but Powell broke clear soon after and fired under Watson.
