Chelsea have not been able to keep up their early-season form under Frank Lampard.

Chelsea currently have a lack of confidence and creativity in their team, according to former Arsenal striker Ian Wright.

Chelsea suffered their fifth Premier League loss in their last seven matches when they went down 2-0 at home to struggling Southampton on Boxing Day. Goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond condemned Frank Lampard’s side so a shock defeat.

Chelsea are still fourth in the Premier League table, three points clear of their nearest challengers Tottenham.

Wright believes Lampard has the players at his disposal to turn their form around but says at the moment they are struggling with confidence and creating chances.

Chelsea are still fourth in the Premier League table, three points clear of their nearest challengers Tottenham.

Wright believes Lampard has the players at his disposal to turn their form around but says at the moment they are struggling with confidence and creating chances.

"I think that you can see that they’ve got the players [to turn it around], they’ve got the players capable of doing it,” Wright said on Match of the Day.

"I think that confidence is a massive problem with, and creativity.

"It’s something where we know that they’re good enough to get results there.

"They need to get their confidence going, they need to find it.”

Chelsea have now lost three of their last four home matches, with defeats to West Ham and Bournemouth before Thursday’s disappointing performance against Saints.

Lampard admits their form at Stamford Bridge must improve if they are to stay in the top four come the end of the season.

"It’s the same story,” the former midfielder said.

"I’ll probably give you the exact same press conference as I gave after Bournemouth.

"If you’re an offensive player, play round the corner, join, mix up your game and break defensive lines because teams aren’t stupid – you need to do more in an attacking sense. Personality comes in – in lots of different ways.

"Today it was in a football sense: of finding and taking the ball into tight spaces and delivering something. We didn’t do it.

"If you are on the run we are on at home, there is more pressure because everyone talks about it. We feel it.

"People are coming here and respecting us as Chelsea because they are setting up in that way but we are not playing like the Chelsea that can break that down.

"It is a clear statement that you need a form of consistency to come in the top four.

"If we want to stay there, we have to move onwards and upwards.

"We need to win more than we have won recently at home.”

Chelsea are back in action on Sunday when they visit Arsenal in Mikel Arteta’s first home game in charge of the Gunners (2pm).
