Joey Barton pleased with Fleetwood’s progress on the road

Fleetwood head coach Joey Barton believes his side are learning how to play well away from home following their 2-2 draw at Rotherham.

Ched Evans twice put the visitors in front but Rotherham rallied to ensure they stayed above their opponents in the Sky Bet League One table.

Freddie Ladapo’s header got the Millers level only for Evans to score a minute later from a shambolic defensive lapse between Matt Olosunde and goalkeeper Daniel Iversen.

Matt Crooks ensured a spare of the spoils as he nipped in to level from close range with just 10 minutes left on the clock.

Barton said: “At this moment in time we have got the feelgood factor at home and we fancy our chances against anybody. The challenge is to build on that on the road and that was a step in the right direction towards that.

“We knew the qualities Rotherham have got after coming out of the Championship last season. They have players who at League One level can be match-winners and influence the game.

“We knew we would have to attack. We would not come here and try to contain because they have got some firepower.

“I thought we were superb. The first half was as good as we have played away from home in my time here.

“We were dominant and passed the ball well. We were a tad unfortunate not to go in with a further lead.

“They had nothing to lose in the second half because they were not in the ascendancy.”

Rotherham manager Paul Warne was forced to patch up his side with several players playing out of position.

He said: “We had to jiggle the side quite a lot but that aside we didn’t really play well enough in the first half. It looked a bit lacklustre, which is disappointing.

“We wanted to make the fans happy in the second half. I was really pleased when we got back into it. I thought we would go on and win it. It felt like one of those great days at New York.

“The second goal is a calamity really. That is the nicest way to put it. We didn’t need that misfortune. But in fairness to the lads’ character we came back in it again.

“I thought we might nick it but it wasn’t to be.

“At half-time I asked them to do things a bit differently and play with a bit more speed and to get crosses into the box. If you do that, you get chances.

“I didn’t think we moved the ball quick enough and we allowed them to get their shape. We are at our best when we play forward.”
