Man City boss Pep Guardiola could block Mikel Arteta Arsenal move says Goater
Mikel Arteta has been linked with a return to Arsenal

Shaun Goater claims Pep Guardiola would want either Mikel Arteta or Patrick Vieira to continue his Manchester City dynasty.

The ex-Barcelona boss has won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and EFL Cup during his stint at the Eithad.

However, his contract expires next summer and City look highly unlikely to catch table-topping Liverpool this season.

Arteta is currently Guardiola’s assistant, although has been linked with the vacant Arsenal manager’s job.

Nice boss Viera is also a contender to take charge in north London, having initially started his coaching career with City.

Club legend Goater isn’t convinced Guardiola is ready to call it quits.

But he reckons Viera or Arteta will be firmly in the running to take over if he does.

“I can see Guardiola wanting to build a dynasty and if he were to win the Champions League, he might extend his contract,” he said.

“But he was already thinking about his successor with Viera - and who's to say that door has already closed.

“Viera had a good relationship with Guardiola and the hierarchy.

“I get the impression it's the same with Arteta.

“There is an understanding that maybe these guys can go one somewhere else and prove themselves, but the door is never closed.

“There's a huge respect from Guardiola to Arteta. That speaks volumes.

“Of all the people that he could have as an assistant, he's got him.”

Arsenal are reluctant to panic, but interim boss Freddie Ljungberg hasn’t been convincing in the Emirates hot seat.

He’s managed just won win - against lowly West Ham - earlier this week.

Goater has warned that City won’t let Arteta leave the club without a fight.

“He seems to be one of those guys that's a calming influence who can make sure Guardiola is grounded,” he added.

“The focus will now be on the Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

“Reading between the lines, Guardiola wouldn't want Arteta to leave until the end of the season - and you can understand why.

“Arteta obviously understands all the tactics and what the club are doing and why.

“He'll be very happy working with the best manager in the world and continuously learning.

“But whenever he does leave - to Arsenal or another club - surely he'll do well.”
