Gareth Ainsworth hails Wycombe’s defensive performance against Doncaster

Old reliable Joe Jacobson sealed a late victory for Wycombe over 10-man Doncaster but Gareth Ainsworth pointed to his side’s defensive performance as the key to the 1-0 Sky Bet League One triumph.

Doncaster spent most of the second half with just 10 men after Tom Anderson was sent off for an ugly tackle on Matt Bloomfield, yet it took an injury-time penalty for the league leaders to finally break their visitors down.

It was veteran Jacobson – with the best part of 250 games worth of Chairboys experience under his belt – who kept his cool from 12 yards after Donervon Daniels had bundled Adebayo Akinfenwa over in the box.

But with Rovers mostly limited to half-chances, Wycombe boss Ainsworth saluted his resilient back-line for securing a 10th league clean sheet of the campaign.

“I’m really pleased with the win,” he said. “Every win is a big win for us and we want to keep this feeling up.

“We deserve to be top of the league. We keep proving people wrong and want to keep on doing that.

“One-nil wins are the perfect result really. You need a clean sheet and to be perfect defensively.

“We’ve shown that here. We’ve hit the same amount of clean sheets as we did last season and I’m pleased with that.

“We went against 10 men on Wednesday (in a 2-1 FA Cup replay defeat to Tranmere) and that didn’t work out as well.

“It took us right until the very end to break them down but the important point is we broke them down.

“That shows the mental toughness and the character of this team. They go until the very last minute and that makes us dangerous.”

Doncaster were left frustrated after falling further away from the play-off places and manager Darren Moore believes they did not get the result their battling display warranted.

“The players are disappointed and rightly so because of the commitment and hard work they showed,” explained Moore. “They probably feel like it got stripped away from them right at the end.

“We’ve battled bravely with 10 men for almost half the game and to lose it right at the end is tough to take.

“Football is an absolutely incredible game and your concentration levels have to be absolutely spot on all the time.

“They feel disappointed having gone up against the league leaders and just come up short.

“Take no credit away from Wycombe, they are great at what they do and they are relentless at it. What they do has got them to where they are at the moment and they’ll stay like that.

“For 80-odd minutes we were very good and limited them to very little but it just wasn’t to be at the end.”
