Mike Williamson proud of Gateshead despite defeat to Oldham

Mike Williamson was full of praise for his Gateshead side despite watching their FA Cup dreams end with a 2-1 defeat to Oldham.
The National League North outfit dominated for large parts and looked set for a replay when Liam Agnew cancelled out Filipe Morais’ opener, only for Jonny Smith to curl in the winner.
“I thought we were brilliant. From first whistle to the last minute. I thought we won our battles, we had energy, we had belief. We just didn’t have that final end product,” said player-manager Williamson.
“The lads in the changing room know what we are capable of and the levels we can reach. That’s why after the game everyone is pretty gutted and down about the result.
“But there were so many positives there and it was thoroughly enjoyable to watch.”
Oldham are into the second round for the seventh time in nine years but the League Two side did not have things their own way.
“The most important thing in the FA Cup is to go through,” said manager Dino Maamria.
“It is usual playing a team two divisions below you, with a point to prove who raise their level for a FA Cup game.
“We got the game we expected to get, very tough and I am glad we got through in the end.”
