Mellon rues ‘missed opportunity’ as Tranmere draw with Wycombe

Tranmere manager Micky Mellon felt that his side’s 2-2 draw with Wycombe was a missed opportunity in the FA Cup first round at Prenton Park.

Kieron Morris gave Rovers an early lead before the visitors overturned the deficit either side of half time with goals from Joe Jacobson and Alex Samuel, but Morris struck again to ensure that this tie must be settled in a replay at Adams Park.

Mellon said: “We were disappointed with the goals that we’ve lost from set plays, but overall you’d have to say a really hard-fought, keenly-contested cup tie.

“Kieron Morris has scored two good goals today. We keep on at him, saying that he can weigh in with more goals with the quality that he has. Two really good finishes that keeps us in the hat.

“We were one nil up and probably cruising and then we gave away a free kick on the edge of the box. We know how dangerous the lad (Jacobson) is from there. It’s a missed opportunity and they’ve got themselves back in the game.

“But in terms of resilience and all of the qualities that are needed in a FA cup tie we weren’t found wanting. Maybe right at the end there we could’ve nicked it.”

Winger Morris was Tranmere’s best attacking threat throughout the match and when he held off his marker three minutes into the contest, he drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

That finish was upstaged by Jacobson’s freekick, which he expertly bent into top corner left-footed.

Poor defending from Rovers allowed Samuel to poke the Chairboys back in front from inside the box, but the hosts were the better attacking team and deservedly drew level again through the impressive Morris.

Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth said: “It’s away from home and we haven’t been beat again. It’s a fantastic result for us, just the fixture build-up now is looking very Tranmere-ish for us.

“The boys have given everything. I thought Tranmere defended well, they were solid opponents at times but we had the chances to win it at the end.

“Akinfenwa has just missed the top corner and Darius (Charles) has almost popped one in. The keeper made a fantastic save from Dave Wheeler, so we’ve had some real good chances at the end.

“The second goal is disappointing for me though. My comedy moment were my lads have claimed for offside when one of our lads put it forward. I think that was more out of hope. If the referee gets that one wrong he’s in big trouble. We are pleased to be in the hat after a fantastic cup tie.”
