Grayson pleased with Blackpool’s determination in defence

Blackpool manager Simon Grayson hailed his side’s determination after they secured a hard-earned point from a goalless draw with Burton.

Blackpool were under pressure for most of the second half after Curtis Tilt’s dismissal for two yellow cards but almost nicked all three points at the death through substitute Armand Gnanduillet.

“When you are down to 10 men with 30-odd minutes still on the clock remaining you will take a clean sheet and a point against a team that can cause you problems with eleven men” the Tangerines boss said.

“We had to dig deep and work hard and put our bodies on the line and get blocks in and ultimately we are happy with a clean sheet.

“We had one or two half chances on the counter attack. You can’t just go gung-ho with 10 men but we brought Armand on who reacted well to being left out and he managed to burst through, maybe he could have taken his shot a little earlier but you just end up disappointed that it has clipped the post.

“It was one of those games where you would certainly have taken a nil-nil but a smash and grab opportunity at the end would have been perfect for us.”

Grayson had no issue with referee Carl Boyeson showing Tilt a second yellow for a foul on Oliver Sarkic having already booked him as early as the second minute for a foul on Nathan Broadhead.

“No complaints” he said of the sending off. “He has been booked in the first half and second half he goes for the challenge.

“If you go for a tackle like that you have to make sure you win it so it’s a yellow card and a sending off.”

For Burton boss Nigel Clough it was a case of being so close to three points but a fourth home league clean sheet in a row was still pleasing.

“It is important to keep a clean sheet because that is what has got us the point today and that is four out of six at home this season which is very important,” he said.

Clough also praised Blackpool’s resilience but admitted it was a day when nothing really fell for his side.

“I did think that they (Blackpool) defended magnificently well, especially when they went down to 10 men throwing bodies in front of the ball and it just seemed like one of those days when nothing quite seemed to drop for us in the penalty area,” Clough added.

“Every time it did drop it was just under someone’s feet or just behind them and we just couldn’t make that clear-cut opportunity.

“There were lots of nearly and if onlys today. We couldn’t do any more than we did.

“We threw everybody we could forward and we finished the game with just one recognised defender on the pitch.

“The endeavour and everything was there, we just needed that moment of quality.”
