Pressley pledges to win battle to turn Carlisle fortunes around

Steven Pressley pledged to turn Carlisle’s fortunes round despite seeing them suffer a fourth straight defeat as they lost 2-0 to Northampton.

It was a happy return for former Carlisle boss Keith Curle, whose side scored second-half goals through Scott Pollock — his first senior goal — and Sam Hoskins.

Pressley said: “I totally understand the supporters’ disappointment and we are extremely frustrated, but I still have belief in the players and the message is we will get through this.

“It’s evident we have got to score from the opportunities created. But as a manager here I’m determined to get through this period. It is difficult, but I work 24/7 to make this club better and will continue to do so.

“I don’t run from criticism. I will battle to turn this club around. It is a club in transition and we have changed a lot. There’s no point feeling sorry for ourselves. We have to show courage and find a way to win and turn the disappointment into results.”

The game was level after a first half in which neither side managed to gain the upper hand, but Carlisle found chances hard to come by once they went behind in the 51st minute when Pollock swept the ball home from 15 yards.

Harry McKirdy provided a glimmer of hope with a shot that flew narrowly side, but Hoskins settled all doubts with the Cobblers’ second goal two minutes into stoppage time.

Curle said: “We are getting players back and adjusting to how we have been trying to play. It is a building season. We brought in 15 players, a bit like Carlisle, and we are creating a culture by effort and results.

“We got a smack in the face when we lost to Scunthorpe and the players were challenged to react to it.”
