Flynn requires ‘ruthless streak’ from Newport

Newport manager Michael Flynn was happy to extend an 16-match unbeaten home run in Sky Bet League Two with a 1-1 draw against Crawley – but still felt his side could have taken all three points.
Crawley hit the front with a 35th-minute penalty from Ashley Nathaniel-George and held out until the 73rd minute, when they conceded a spot-kick that Tristan Abrahams converted.
“It was quite an even first half, and I thought we started the better, but it was a penalty. Danny’s (defender McNamara) hand was slightly out and you can’t do it these days, so I’m not going to moan about that,” said Flynn.
“It was harsh, but it was a penalty. I thought the boys were excellent in the second half and we should have scored two or three – we should have won the game.
“I keep saying that week in, week out, and I’ve told the players that we need to get this ruthless streak. We can’t score wonder goals every week, we’ve got to score ugly ones, the tap-ins.
“Tristan (Abrahams) is disappointed he missed that chance at the end but he came on and he was excellent. He had the confidence to take the penalty and we should have won the game against a decent Crawley team.”
Crawley manager Gabriele Cioffi was full of praise for the way his side stood up to a team who sat 10 places and seven points above them in the table before kick-off.
“We deserved more against Bradford last weekend and we felt a bit bitter, but tonight we are happy,” said Cioffi.
“We looked resilient, strong and had desire. We put our bodies on the line and I am happy because we are growing game by game.
“We read the game well in the first half and we forced them to change. I lost five years in those last five minutes and it could have ended up as any sort of result.
“We have a young squad, many with no league experience, and we are growing day by day. This will be an important step for us.”
