Barton salutes Madden’s ‘extra special composure’ after second-half hat-trick

Manager Joey Barton showered praise on Paddy Madden after his clinical hat-trick inspired Fleetwood to a 4-1 victory over Burton.

Madden grabbed all of his goals in the second half after providing the assist for strike partner Ched Evans to open the scoring.

The three points lifted the Cod Army back up to fourth place in League One.

Barton said: “Paddy was in the right place at the right time for Ched’s goal in the first half, and then obviously he’s got the three goals in the second.

“Three goals and an assist is never a bad haul of course, and it always makes a manager look better than he probably is when those decisions to recall him come off.

“It’s not easy to score goals at the level he has for as long as he has.

“Clearly Paddy’s got that something that gives him that extra special composure a top striker needs in front of goal.

“He doesn’t look rushed, he doesn’t look flustered, he just expects to score goals when he gets in there.

“That’s a quality that is always in the best strikers, no matter what level they play at.

“The goal is the same size in the Premier League as it is in League One.”

Just past the half-hour mark Burton’s Scott Fraser drove a low shot against a post before Fleetwood grabbed the opener five minutes later.

Evans could not miss from three yards as he met Madden’s low cross.

The Brewers levelled just before half-time when Oliver Sarkic followed up to score after his initial shot was parried by goalkeeper Alex Cairns.

Madden restored the hosts’ lead in the 58th minute as he volleyed home Lewie Coyle’s clipped cross from 10 yards.

He netted again 10 minutes later when he superbly headed home Wes Burns’ cross before completing his treble at the death when he rolled the ball in after being teed up by substitute Josh Morris.

Burton boss Nigel Clough was understandably frustrated after watching his side blown away in the second period.

Clough said: “It’s a terrible, terrible result, so we’re all extremely disappointed of course.

“We dominated possession at times, but in the end the result doesn’t lie. We’ve been well beaten in the end.

“It was simply a case of Fleetwood were much more clinical than us on the day.

“Certainly in the first half they didn’t create any more chances than us.

“They’ve come more into the game in the second half and hurt us at the right times.

“We dominate the first 20 minutes, but we just couldn’t get a shot off.

“That highlights the main difference between the two sides I suppose.

“We were looking relatively comfortable at half-time and I just told the players to go and take it on.

“But to go and lose three goals in the second half and lose the game in the manner we did was massively disappointing.”
