Daryl McMahon praises Macclesfield performance in win over Port Vale

Macclesfield manager Daryl McMahon insisted his side were deserving winners as they came from behind to beat Port Vale 2-1.

Paddy Osadebe hit the Silkmen’s winner midway through the second half after Arthur Gnahoua had cancelled out Richie Bennett’s opener for Vale.

And after their first League Two victory since August, McMahon said how pleased he was that his side had fought back from their early setback.

“It was a very good performance from us,” he said. “We played some really good football, we were clinical with the chances we had in their box. We had a number of set pieces, particularly in the first half – we put them under real pressure, it was a deserved win for us.

“We reacted brilliantly to going behind, we didn’t change it at all; we kept playing, kept probing and creating chances and putting them under pressure, we were winning the ball back in their half – our performance was really good.”

McMahon also had plenty of praise for Gnahoua, a free-agent capture who has hit two in two games, adding: “Arthur’s given us something different going forward that we didn’t have before, he has that strength and pace to get up at the defenders and take them on one-v-one. It was another good finish from him, to add to a great goal last week.

“I still think there’s more to come from Arthur, to be honest. He needs more games because he’s flagging late on in games, he’s not had much of a pre-season but he’s getting better and better every day.”

While Macc broke a seven-game winless league run, Port Vale’s search for a first victory away from home this term went on.

And downhearted manager John Askey was visibly frustrated on his return to the club at which he spent more than 30 years as player and manager.

“We didn’t play, right from the off,” he said. “We never got the ball down or pass it like we can do, it was very disappointing.

“We got what we deserved today. Our last few performances have been decent and even though we haven’t won away from home we’ve played some good football. But today we never really got going.

“In the last 10 minutes we showed a little bit without being a real threat. It just wasn’t good enough.

“We were fortunate to get our goal because we hadn’t really caused them any problems. We got it and wanted to push on but didn’t do.

“We have to start keeping clean sheets for a start because sometimes you won’t play particularly well and you have to just battle your way through. Today was one of those games where we had to see it through and we never did. It’s just disappointing from everybody really.”
