Graham Alexander delighted as Salford dig in to defeat Cambridge

Delighted Salford boss Graham Alexander saluted his players after they hung on for a 1-0 Sky Bet League Two victory over Cambridge.

Adam Rooney netted the all-important winner late on as the Ammies went on to complete their first run of back-to-back victories since joining the Football League.

Alexander said: “I’m delighted for all the players. They’ve dug in and got the result.

“It was a really tight game between two well-organised teams, but we’ve come away with the win after a good game and I’m really proud.

“That’s two wins and two clean sheets on the bounce for us now. I really can’t ask for more than that.

“There were numerous really strong performances out there, and we needed them.

“Cambridge carry plenty of threat going forward, and they’ve had a good away record so far this season.

“We’re maturing nicely as a team in this league, so long may that continue.”

Alexander also praised former Aberdeen hit-man Rooney, who bagged his third goal of the season.

“Adam has done what he does best there,” said Alexander. “He’s moved across the defender really well and guided his header right into the corner.

“It was a terrific finish, and one which gave us three huge points. He is another who is proving invaluable for us at this level.”

Cambridge’s George Maris was unlucky early on as his spectacular volley just cleared the Salford crossbar.

The visitors upped the tempo in the second half and, after Maris saw a header saved, Salford goalkeeper Kyle Letheren then brilliantly kept out Luke Hannant’s thumping strike from 15 yards.

However, the hosts grabbed their winning goal with 13 minutes to go when Rooney expertly guided a header into the corner as he rose to meet Craig Conway’s out-swinging cross.

Cambridge boss Colin Calderwood was understandably disappointed after his side’s winless league run was extended to four matches.

Calderwood said: “It’s a blow because we had opportunities in the second half particularly.

“We really don’t deserve to get nothing from the game but, having said that, this is what happens when you don’t defend a cross properly.

“We have to do better in those type of situations.

“There was minimal danger from Salford I thought. We had grown nicely into the game and we should have done better in one or two situations.

“Frustratingly, though, we’ve got no reward for our efforts.

“We have to accept it, though, and now it’s up to us all not to be too hurt by this result.

“It was looking like an obvious clean sheet for us before the goal, but we’ve not got it and we have to move on to the next game.”
