Kane Vincent-Young scored his first goal for Ipswich to move his side top of Sky Bet League One following a 1-0 victory at Gillingham.
Summer signing Vincent-Young met Kayden Jackson’s curling cross to head past a stranded Jack Bonham after 32 minutes.
Paul Lambert’s side were a denied a second shortly after the hour when Alan Judge’s low shot rebounded off the post following Vincent-Young’s surging run through midfield. Bonham also saved well to deny Jon Nolan with 23 minutes to go.
Midfielder Olly Lee missed the Gills’ best chances in a tight opening half, scuffing two shots wide from close range.
Tom O’Connor’s 20-yard volley on the half-hour mark landed on the roof of the net with Town goalkeeper Tomas Holy beaten.
Ipswich captain Luke Chambers produced a brilliant last-ditch tackle to deny Alex Jakubiak as the Gills searched for an equaliser, while Brandon Hanlan headed wide from substitute Ben Pringle’s corner.
Mark Byrne and Mikael Mandron also shot tamely at Holy in the second half as Steve Evans’ Gills fell to their first league defeat in five games.
