Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson recently quipped at a birthday party that “you’ve got to have a good f****ng chairman” if you want to make it as a football manager.

Ferguson, 77, boasts a managerial record that no one in the game even comes close to.

Over 26 successful years at Old Trafford, the Scot guided United to a record 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues.

He called time on his career having wrapped up a 13th and final league crown at the end of the 2012/13 campaign, taking on a new role at United as a director and club ambassador in the process.

Becoming a football manager is a daunting task in this day and age as few last longer than five years in high-profile jobs, highlighting exactly how remarkable Fergie’s 26-year reign was.

And Duncan Castles has revealed that the man himself recently offered advice to any aspiring gaffers at former Celtic star Pat Stanton’s 75th birthday party.

“[He] was asked his advice for people going into management and Sir Alex’s advice was ‘you’ve got to have, got to have, a good f****ng chairman,” he said on Reach Plc’s Transfer Window podcast.

“'Dick Donald made me [at Aberdeen]'.”

Ferguson started his managerial career with a brief stint at East Stirlingshire, before spending four years at St Mirren and leading the club to the Scottish title.

It was at Aberdeen where he truly made a name for himself, nevertheless, picking up three league titles and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in the 1982/83 season.

Ferguson would then join United in 1986, yet it took the legendary boss three years to claim his first trophy in an FA Cup final triumph against Crystal Palace.

His first league title at Old Trafford came seven years after his appointment, which preceded a two-decade-long stranglehold on English football.
