Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confident David De Gea will sign new Man Utd contract

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is “pretty confident” David de Gea will pen a new deal with the club.

The 28-year-old Spanish goalkeeper sees his present contract with the Red Devils expire in June 2020.

De Gea’s contractual situation: Five key things to know…

· David de Gea joined Man Utd from boyhood club Atlético Madrid in 2011.

· He’s gone on to make 366 appearances in all competitions, registering 129 clean sheets.

· His present deal at Old Trafford expires in June 2020.

· It means he could hypothetically speak to a club next January before signing as a free agent.

· Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though, is “pretty confident” he’ll break the impasse and put pen to paper.

There were strong reports in the summer De Gea had signed an extension but nothing was made official, subsequently enhancing speculation regarding his future at Old Trafford.

All this recent contract talk has coincided with the Madrid-born shot-stopper suffering a dip in form; across Man Utd’s opening four Premier League matches this season he’s conceded four goals whilst keeping one clean sheet.

That being said, his club boss Solskjaer is content with his presence in the dressing room, though conceded the 20-time English champions must improve as a whole if they are to retain a player of his calibre.

Solskjaer, who took charge last December before receiving the job full time, is also urging patience and is in no doubt of the eventual outcome.

“I’ve obviously not been involved in all the discussions, but I’m very – or pretty – confident we’ll get this sorted,” he said.

“David’s never, ever said anything else to me, other than he loves this club, he wants to stay here and he’s had a fantastic time, so let’s hope we just get it over the line.

“We are always aware of what’s happening around in the world. But my focus and the club’s focus is to convince him to stay. He can see what we’re doing, and knows what we’re doing. We want players here, the best ones, and the ones we want most of the time stay. There are not many who we want to keep that we don’t manage to keep.

“I have two very good backup keepers with Sergio [Romero] and Lee [Grant]. Dean [Henderson] is playing at Sheffield United. So the goalkeeping department is in good health. And I said I am confident we will manage to convince David that here is the future for him. And it is a successful future, a club that wants to get back to winning trophies.”
